Master Class: "How to Become an International Lawyer"
On 29 September 2026, Tashkent Metropolitan University hosted the master class "How to Become an International Lawyer: Notes from a Decade in Cross-Border Practice". It was devoted to the paths into an international legal career.
The speaker was Steve Shi, a lawyer who has practised in several jurisdictions, including China and the United States. He specialises in cross-border law, intellectual property, compliance, corporate governance and dispute resolution.
Students explored the main areas of international legal practice:
- cross-border work in law firms
- in-house practice
- arbitration and dispute resolution
- careers in international organisations
- legal research and academia
A separate part of the session covered professional qualifications and foreign bar admission in the United States, England and Wales, and Hong Kong.
💡 The key message: an international legal career does not begin with moving abroad or obtaining a foreign licence. It starts with a solid professional foundation:
- deep knowledge of your own national legal system
- comparative legal analysis
- clear legal communication
- the ability to work with clients and colleagues from other jurisdictions
- a willingness to take responsibility for professional decisions
The master class gave future lawyers a space for professional dialogue and an exchange of international experience. It also offered a practical look at the opportunities open to them in an increasingly interconnected legal world.
